It was the time of year when the Gardener and his wife started lining up terra-cotta pots on the porch railings and filling them, two to four each week, with tiny, fragrant plants: basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, several varieties of sage, and even a few edible flowers.
Every afternoon, while gathering the mail, Squirrel checked the lineup of pots for new plants before scampering off — first, of course, to deliver the mail, and then to report any newly planted herbs to Raccoon and Rabbit and Mama Chipmunk, who were already making their lists and planning their summertime meals and parties.
